This historic communication venture will transform beyond recognition not only traveling around Poland, but also around Europe and around the world. The object is to be ready in 8 years, so it’s high time for further visualizations.

Looking at it, we can not conclude that the Central Communication Port will be a futuristic facility that will be built with great momentum. It will not be just a regular airport. Ultimately, it will be a city. This should not come as a surprise, after all it will be the largest investment of this type in our country for many decades. The most important interchange port in Central Europe for 40 to 100 million people traveling by plane and train is to consume about PLN 35 billion.

So far, the world-famous architectural offices such as Chapman Taylor, Foster + Partners, Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid Architects, Benoy and Pascall + Watson have presented their visions at CPK. Although they differ from each other, they have a common denominator in the form of a very bold concept that brings to mind the futurism of the metropolis of the future.

Now Woods Bagot, Populous and KPF presented their visions. Their representatives came to Warsaw to personally tell investors about them and set directions for the development of the construction plan, which is to be commissioned at the beginning of next year.

“For the second time, we have invited architects to cooperate with a rich portfolio of designed and implemented investments to ask them what Solidarity Airport can look like. The moment is not accidental. By the end of October, we consult with industry partners the technical and operational requirements of the new airport. Our goal is to reconcile CPK’s conceptual assumptions with the needs of future users, “said Mikołaj Wild, government plenipotentiary for CPK construction.


Designers from the KPF studio who worked, among others When planning the airports in Abu Dhabi, Amsterdam and Seoul, they assumed that – due to the convenience of CPK passengers – the distance between the central part of the airport – and the furthest airport gates could not be too large. Their goal was to shorten check-in times and facilitate transfers. As a result, they proposed triangle-shaped terminals: larger as part of the first stage of CPK construction, and the second as smaller as the second stage (if there is such a demand in the future) torrent sites links directory.

“The triangular shape of the terminal is optimal from an architectural point of view and brings many benefits. It means convenience of movement, reduction of transfer times and ease of adapting the space. By the way, the triangle is a beautiful shape, reminiscent of clasped hands and associated with solidarity that is so close to Polish identity, “explains architect Jens Hardvendel from KPF. Through its shorter side, the triangular terminal would be connected to the planned high-speed railway station connecting Warsaw, CPK and Łódź (eventually Poznań and Wrocław). According to KPF, travel time and smoothness of transfers from train to aircraft and vice versa may determine the success of the new airport.

The architects designed the interior of the CPK terminal as a spacious and light hall with a transparent roof. At its top they placed orange skylights of irregular shape, reminiscent of traditional Polish amber, whose deposits can be found, among others in the Baltic Sea. Inside the terminal there were trees and pots with plants, which are supposed to be a “stress relieving” factor. – “If you spend at the airport, for example, two or three hours at the airport, then you appreciate solutions that improve passenger comfort,” KPF designers explain.

“A transfer port can help build a positive image of a country, as exemplified by Singapore Changi Airport. Warsaw is the heart of Europe, and in addition the center of a region where there is no large hub hub, which means that there is an evident market niche that Poland can use, “says Mustafa Chehabeddine, director. planning at KPF. “

The architects of this studio are guided by the slogan: “The airport of the future has not been designed yet”. For example, they foresee that in the future security control may be completely different than today (e.g. without stopping at the gates, using special scanners at the airport entrance). This means that the concept of an airport should be flexible, modular and allow adaptation of the design of the future airport, e.g. in terms of new technologies.

The architects of Woods Bagot were delighted with the Polish landscape and the nature that changed with the seasons. In their concept, characteristic ceilings appeared in the terminal referring to the appearance of tree trunks and reminiscent of the Polish forest. According to the architects, a park with benches, paths for walking, cycling and inline skating is to be created in the area of ​​the port. The glass walls of the terminal are to allow admiring the green space around the airport and relax before traveling.

As the designers say, the uniqueness of the place is important when creating the concept. Therefore, in their opinion, the Solidarity Airport terminal should emphasize Polish hospitality, and therefore be open not only to travelers, but also to visitors who came to the airport to spend time there, eat a meal, meet friends or do shopping.

“We want the project to be unique, stimulate the senses, but at the same time be practical and focus on ease of travel. All this so that Solidarity Airport becomes a place where you just want to go back. We travel more and more, professionally and privately, and flying becomes a lifestyle. The airport of the future should therefore be a temporary escape from stress and everyday problems. Not only to be a place to wait for a plane, but also a relaxation zone “- emphasizes Cliff Bollmann, director. Woods Bagot Regional Transport Solutions.

Woods Bagot, like Populous, monitors passenger data when designing the airport. They are interested in how travelers move around the terminal, where they stop, what obstacles they would like to avoid. Only after defining the paths that individual groups of passengers follow does the company design accurate solutions. “Intuitively finding the way to the right gate, no matter how we arrived at the airport, by train, bus or car. This is where you can get to know a well-designed airport, “explains the architects at Woods Bagot.


According to designers from the Populous office in London, CPK is to be an “airport-city”, which is a direct reference to the concept of Airport City. The studio refers to its experience in designing elements of Changi airports in Singapore and De Gaulle in Paris, but also stadium projects, e.g. sports facilities for the 2012 Olympics in London.

In Populous’s concept, travel through the airport begins when passengers disembark from the train at the railway station integrated with the terminal, located on the lowest floor of the node. Departures and arrivals halls, business lounges etc. are located highest, while the middle floors are to be partly open to the outside, creating public space in places referring to elements of Polish architecture.

Arriving at the airport will have a choice: go directly to security check or leave your luggage and use the numerous attractions of the “airport-city” also located in the public area, in front of the restricted area of ​​the port. You can choose from places to relax and rest (like a SPA and massage center, or comfortable reading places), sports (gym and swimming pool), but also to work and business meetings, which will be able to take place, e.g. in airport conference rooms. Digital, interactive and VR (as part of virtual reality) solutions, e.g. e-sports gaming platforms, will be available in the airport’s entertainment area.

“Our project is to go beyond creating the usual” transition space “that people simply pass on the way to the plane. We imagined that the passenger on the way to the gate would get a kind of pleasure from what he sees around, “explains Populous architects.

Designers announce thoughtful location of commercial spaces, which will contain stores from various industries, with e-websites and the possibility of online shopping. This zone would also include restaurants with a view of the runway and open terraces. In the terminal space, architects from Populous have also not forgotten about places for families with children, which they proposed, among others indoor and outdoor playgrounds.

The designers stipulate that the airport concept they represent is for the time being a preliminary version, and at a later stage there may be elements referring to the “spirit of the place”. Polish and Central and Eastern Europe.
